Grateful Dead - Why Don't We Do It in The Road - 4/7/85
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sbg352cJYYE
This video is from the show. Great intro by Phil.
Dead covers of the Beatles did not always work but this one certainly did. It is not a very complicated tune so maybe that helped out. Always like when you get Phil and Brent singing together. (like in 'Tons of Steel')This was the beginning of a very hot first set. [an '85'favorite for me]
This was a rare tune for the DEAD live. In one of the California versions they sang "Why don't we do it on the drums".

Whoever put up the video took some artistic liberty.

On 'Why Don't we do it'
McCartney wrote the song after seeing two monkeys copulating in the street while on retreat in Rishikesh, India with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. He marvelled in the simplicity of this natural scenario when compared to the emotional turmoil of human relationships. He later said:

‘’A male just hopped on the back of this female and gave her one, as they say in the vernacular. Within two or three seconds he hopped off again and looked around as if to say, ‘It wasn’t me,’ and she looked around as if there’d been some mild disturbance … And I thought … that’s how simple the act of procreation is … We have horrendous problems with it, and yet animals don’t.

Stratocaster;
I think whoever made the video might agree with you because they never gets past Garcia when they pan right of the drummers.
Every band needs a little xylophone.

Wait. Did you just say something good about Tons of Steel?!?

I have nothing to add on that, except that I admire your bravery. Both for saying that, and for listening to the thing.

BTW the best Why Don't We Do It In the Road is here.

https://archive.org/details/gd84-07-06.senn441.dodd.13898.sbeok.shnf

I know a lot of people don't like Do It In the Road, but I think it's really fun, and I've actually compared them. (There aren't many, they're short, and it's easy to deduct points for every one that becomes "do it on the drums." :-) It was in several of them, actually.)

7/4/84 also has a great Mr. Fantasy. I don't know if it's a "best," as one reviewer says, but it pulls me in, and I'm not a fan of the GD doing Mr. Fantasy because ... ummm because it's a Traffic tune and I always hear it that way. (I didn't say I was logically consistent.)

Mando, from your '84 project, how did you rate 7/6/84?

AR - Here you go.

The show:

"A solid above average show. The stand outs carried more weight than the handful of annoyingly chimey tunes. Make no mistake, the chimey tunes were really bad. Plus we got the added ick factor of Why Don’t We Do It In The Road....Still, with the peaks much higher than the valleys were low, the show was a good one."

The song:

"s. Why Don’t We Do It In the Road – The longest 3:55 in recorded Grateful Dead history. Why don’t we throw this song in the trash can? Along with Brent’s ridiculous falsetto screeching and screaming."

The best this song could achieve in The 1984 Project was to suck bad enough to be capable of drawing a vacuum on deep space.

I figured the show would rate above average but not in the top tier. Was curious about that.

On the song, I take it you may possibly be in the "anti" camp, then.

:-)

But you are wrong about the longest 3:55 in GD recorded history. Any given 3:55 section of Easy to Love You, Tons of Steel, etc would definitely be longer.
